#SeaCal - The Party

This is it (c) Michael Jackson

All the time, energy, studio hours, photoshop work, protools sessions, practices, and Ford money... it all comes down to this. It's time to celebrate. It's time to party. It's time to show y'all exactly what we've been slaving away on for the last 4 months.

This is going to be nothing short of legendary. We have, all on one stage, some of the best this town has to offer. Everyone will be collaborating to recreate the #SeaCal album in it's entirety for one night only. Pravda is the place - I've had the opportunity to spin there - and it is ripe for a good party.

If you know us, you know we don't f*ck around when it comes to a party.

Get your tickets HERE.

LIFE OF VILLANS - Spring Lookbook

So the homie Kingston is pretty much running shit with his new spring line of the mischievous local label LIFE OF VILLAINS. I was lucky enough to get fitted last week and have already garnered some ooohs, ahhs, and even a couple 'come hithers.' Dude's designs are stupid. And aparently they look really good on attractive women (whoda thunk?)

Peep the new spring lookbook over at Brick to Yo Face.

In The Darkest Hour

Its shit like this that makes me happy to be where I am. Put aside for a minute that Onry is an absolute legend in the Seattle hip hop game. Put aside the fact, that with the inclusion of Chicago based instrumental assasin Zavala this is one of those interstate connections that make a hip hop project so fun. Even put aside the fact that Vessel is clearly one of the best local releases of the year and that Dark Time Sunshine is, as Champagne Champagne's Sir Thomas Grey say "One of my favorite artists doing it in the town right now". Set all that aside and just look at this line up!

The night is being dj'ed by Members Only's DJ Swervewon, and opened by Olypia's Night Fox who I am absolutely stoked to see. From what I've gathered, this is a female production and rap duo that look like they can absolutely tear a party down. Filling out the bill is our family Helladope and Mash Hall... Nuf said. We're not done yet. Attendees will also be treated to a 45 minute set from Seattle's current Brightest star and Rhymesayers roster artist Jake One. And all that before the headliner even takes the stage!! If youre not sold at this point, pack your bags, cause this town aint got shit for you. Old, young, hater, stan whatever get your ass to Neumos on Friday night, so you dont have to read about it in the paper next week. Oh and for the ladies, this night will be hosted by former Saturday Knight, Tilson, who rumor has it is working on a Members Only project of his own... but thats just what I heard somewhere.

DIAMOND DISTRICT

AKA "The Latest Edition of What You've Been Missin"

I you are not hip to the eastcoast slaps of my dude Oddisee then hang your good for nothing head in shame. I am not even stretching the truth when I state that he might just be the best producer on the mic since Dilla, and in the top 3 of my favorite producers doing it right now. He is an absolute beast.

If you still don't believe me, run over to his Bandcamp page and stream his latest offering Travelling Man. 24 tracks, each named after the city it was produced in, each fitting the unique vibe of that locale. Pretty much the dopest instrumental project in recent memory.

If that wasn't enough for you, he is coming HERE with his group Diamond District. May 8th, 9th and 10th to rock some shows (yes I said SHOWS) and will be rocking with us at Jet Set as well.

So wake up Seattle. Get hip. And if you aren't, don't say I didn't warn you...

Breakfast of Champs: Kush & Orange Juice

It's here! I was watching Wiz on Twitter yesterday torture us talking about this tape, well what a pleasant surprise. If you aren't on the Wiz train get ready to be watching my homebase where I will be breaking down all of his projects to date in the coming month or so.

For those of you who don't know me, I've been waving a flag for Wiz since I returned to Oregon last year and was hipped to the man. He is finally coming to Seattle on May 15th (peep the flyer below!) with the Members Only fam State of the Artist opening! Meli at Nectar even wanted to please the kids so she added an all ages event earlier in the evening. Who says Hip Hop ain't for the kids?

"Ante Up" (The Nintendo Beat Computer Voice Take)

This was included on the Producer #2 compilation from Fat City records, read up here.

Pretty much the funniest thing I've heard in a minute, this guy Danny Drive Thru has some beef with rappers and has rendered them obsolete. What did he do? He programmed a computer to rap their lyrics. With his video game remake of the "Ante Up" beat playing and the digitized voice spitting you will be nodding and laughing at the same time. I'm challenging any and all DJ's to work this into their set somehow, someway.

I have the mp3 if you need/want it.

Red Bull... In Amsterdam?

When you are speaking in beats, it doesn't matter where you are at we can all relate.

Seattle has a history with the Red Bull Big Tune beat battle. Having been set up and founded by some of our town's legends like Vitamin D, Jake One & the mayor himself, J Moore it's something anyone from here reps for. And why shouldn't we, it's a competition that has traveled the country and featured performances from so many different levels of producers you can't even begin to fathom the talent Big Tune holds.

Perhaps I'm way late to the party on this but I was unaware that, just how here in America Big Tune travels around hitting different cities and regions, it also does something similar in Europe! Come to find out in September of 2009 some of the Netherlands best beat makers came out and went head to head with some of the countries up and coming talent. The result was Hayzee taking the crown with StatikMusic at number 2 and J'83 going home with the Bronze.

You are probably wondering who these cats are? Well I don't really know but the organizers of this Big Tune are some forward thinking cats. They took the time to compile tracks from all the competitors and dropped it as a free download on their websites.

Filled with some crazy beat soundscapes, if you are fucking with Flying Lotus and the Brainfeeder collective, Hyperdub, Lucky Me (Hudson Mohawke and the rest of his Glasgow beat homies) or any number of other Electro tinged, Dilla inspired/infused modern Hip Hop production, this collection is certainly worth a listen. Not only will you hear some funky and crazy beats but you are gonna be listening to an entire album of cats nobody is working with.

Some of them are flipping samples, some are getting heavy with the bass and static sounds. FS Green samples the He-Man theme and keeps you nodding to his hypnotic strings. While this is a compilation inspired by a beat battle, I think that some of the producers decided to let their work speak for itself rather than trying to come over the top for a CD and that was a good call. Battle beats are dope but don't always demonstrate what a producer can really do.

It plays for less than a half hour, download it and see where some cats are taking the future of this culture we call Hip Hop. What do the emcees out there think of these tracks?

This New Big Boi Jam is the Cut

This is the ridiculous new Big Boi song with Scott Storch on the beat.

Dyme Def "B-Side Classics"

Oh snap! While their February set at the Admirals Lounge is STILL fresh in my mind, Dyme Def is wasting no time keeping things moving dropping a collection of tracks from as far back as 05, most from the last 2 years though.

Personally I'm quite excited for this, I've downloaded most of the tracks that they have dropped as mp3s over the years and have many times over said I should compile them all into some form of a collection - thanks for doing it for me guys! Some of the cuts included here are my fave Dyme Def cuts ever i.e. "Fresher'n'mykicks," "Cheers" and "RollinStone" to name a few.

Download the jams here!

What's Wrong With A Little Gang Starr?

In the wake of Guru's recent health problems Gang Starr mixes flooded the internet. This was the only one I even looked at, probably more so because of the weight I place in certain people's recommendation than because of the songs selected or the rep of Matthew Africa - I'd never heard of dude before.

This mix is a great demonstration of why Gang Starr are one of the best duos ever. Going seamlessly through 38 tracks you hear songs from every release they have, showing off Primo's trademark cuts and his always excellent use of jazz samples. Guru is the Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal, the voice doesn't even matter these days it's just good to hear him rock to beats of the appropriate caliber.

You can download the mix here courtesy of Matthew Africa. Check out the tracklist below and learn more here.

Starkey ft. P-Money "Numb"

Hearing this in the Fact Mix courtesy of Elijah & Skilliam had me instantly knowing I had to find it, I got on my internet dig and there it was off the new Starkey album Ear Drums and Black Holes - I highly suggest you cop it when it drops next week. In the mean time vibe out to the kick of the drum with P-Money on the rhymes and Starkey on the beat. Another side of that Philly sound.

Speak No Evil

My Guy and Mash Hall known associate Ronny Voice has more than just a move to Seattle hidden up his French cuffed sleeves. Symbolically on the same day Jesus is said to have risen from the dead so too rises Mash Hall's Ronnie Voice's new free sampler Filipino Like A Muthafucka Aww Damn! I personally love this guy Ronnie. His voice is like no other and his spits' stainless steal solid and shiny at the same time. Lyrically Ronnie's more concerned with having fun and getting bitches than he is with with winning a Noble Peace Prize, but what the fuck, sometimes you just gotta get dumb and have fun. And good lord, who better to set this shindig off than Mash Hall's own BlesOne, hands down one of the best party startin producers the town has to offer. To make a long story short, Download this shit and give it a spin in a clean T-shirt, with a cup full of whiskey, on your way to the club!

Enigmatic Seattle emcee J. Pinder is at it again with his new EP Code Red sponsored by Members Only favorites GOODS. But if you cant wait for either album, Pinder is hookin it up with the first single of the EP "Go Far". Here ya go Seattle, wet your whistle with what's to come.
