Fact Magazine Mixes

Fact Magazine has received a lot of praise over the last year or two for being a consistent home for news about new music and music itself. Based in London, Fact tends to focus on the electronic sounds emerging from their city and other like minded ones throughout the world.

While you can get your music news anywhere Fact Mag also provides something exclusive: Twice weekly mixes. Mix number 200 should premiere on Monday sometime and while they keep them live for three weeks they also recently uploaded all past mixes onto their Mixcloud account.

That's just one mix you can find there from the founder of the label that Glass Candy calls home, Italians Do It Better. Dig deep you will find LHF, Space Dimension Controller, Prevelist, Four Tet, album of the year contender Guido, Brainfeeder Lone, a few different LuckyMe representers and the list could continue but I'll spare you the music nerd shock and awe.

I will mention that these mixes tend to feature exclusives, originals and rarities you aren't likely to find regardless of what.cd access or serious Google patience. If your Sunday afternoon was meant for relaxing with some new music put one of Fact's mix on stream and introduce yourself to something new, it's bound to happen. Good Morning w/ Peanut Butter Wolf

Yesterday afternoon Stones Throw founder and vinyl junkie extraordinaire took to the LA Times music blog Pop & Hiss to promote Sunday's marathon 10 DJ show where all involved will kill with strictly the choicest of 45's.



In typical digger fashion, PB Wolf went out this past week and excavated a few gems from LA area record stores. This mix is the result. For those of us here in Seattle, or anywhere but the City of Angeles this weekend take solace in the fact that you can press repeat all you want on this mix. The Paxtons "The Manhattan Project"

If you are unfamiliar with Bandcamp I suggest you investigate. Having spent the better part of this year finding album after album for free on the site, it’s been a beneficial find to say the least. Most of the artists you discover there are unsigned, young and experimenting with new marketing ideas for an industry in disarray. Today a new feature is being launched here at the MO HQ - One Time At Bandcamp... will see an album found on the site reviewed on Monday and an interview with the artist will run on Friday.

Allow me to introduce the Paxtons, the duo of Chris & Dave. They rap and produce, hail from the city of wind and call NY home today. After delivering an entirely self produced album inspired by the film Clerks titled Work they took some time off, moved and are now back with The Manhattan Project - I never heard the first tape but from the description on their site I think it might be more up my alley.

TMP is lively. Almost all the beats will get you moving. Half of it’s self produced and the other half comes from an array of sources. They select the stellar Dam Funk beat “Hood Pass” to rock over trading bars for the duration of the song demonstrating their excellent chemistry, both possessing glorious flows that they utilize to talk about traveling the country, smoking good trees, and having a good time with life.

Their ability to rock beats is the most captivating aspect to their music. Coming in on the opening cut “Ceasar” rocking loud and raw, you feel an energy and passion behind what they are doing. “Ballin” is a bouncing beat with off kilter drums and siren like sounds keeping your mind moving. But instead of wasting their breath talking like every other emcee on a track with the name such as this they kick some thought provoking content that might make you question where and why you are spending your cash.

The Paxtons try alot here. Their aim was large and in some ways they really did create an album that suits the name. The one sheet for this record claims they were aiming for the duel meaning connecting to both their move and the WWII experiments of the same name attempting to build the first atomic bomb, implying they are here to blow up the game I suppose. This record is certainly bombastic.

Content and their interplay puts them above a lot of those competing for the same things in this new music biz. When I started listening to this record I kept feeling as though it lacked something, as I played it through time and time again I picked up new tidbits on every track. A bar here, an sample flip there, the dynamic of them coming in off each other and carrying the baton like champions do. The music here isn’t your cookie cutter, mass manufactured tunes - this is music made with a mission to elevate.

Rog has been making his name known off some stellar remixes. Be on the watch for a collaborative project with him and The Good Sin. This right here is something I woke up to from the guy. Flipping the album closer "Sleeping with a Ghost" into an awesome, spaced out synth trip.

My version of the haunting coda to local group Mash Hall's They La Soul album. Many thanks to DJ Bles One for throwing me the vocals to allow me the opportunity.

Tanya Morgan @ Columbia City Theater Tonight!!!!

Tanya Morgan is on the road to Seattle right now! If you are't at all familiar check out this great video giving you their story from meeting on the Okayplayer message board, to getting down with Phonte and Nicolay on the first Foreign Exchange album and on.



Their sophomore project, Brooklynati was released to high hopes and equal praise. It's a good record that should take Hip Hop fans back in time without making them feel as though they are listening to something old.

Almost all the beats are done by either official member Von Pea or unofficial crew producer Brick Beats and they are full of feel good samples, hard drums and enough funkiness to keep your head nodding.



If you are always complaining, wishing for the days of old for Hip Hop this is the group for you. They have a rep for a ridiculous live show, they are Dilla disciples to the end and they love this culture. Brooklynati will put a goofy happy smile on your face as you progress through the tracks and continue to be impressed and inspired by the feel good vibes that so few rap groups choose to convey with their music today.



The trio of Von Pea, Don Will & Ilyas comprise the group Tanya Morgan. They are a dope rap group that has always put their creativity to the test. Producing a new album wasn't enough, they also conceptualized what would have to be any Hip Hop lovers dream city - Brooklynati. Check out the site and get a peak in to the minds of some creative individuals.

Their music is readily available online and their official projects should be in stores in the town. Come out to Columbia City Theater to experience a show Seattle has never seen before from a crew no one is ready for.

Since last summer’s “Shapeshifters” mixtape, State of the Artist (SOTA) has been steadily bulding their reputation as a young trio of emcees worth paying attention to. Having released several mixtapes over their 3 year existence as a group and forming an alliance with LA production powerhouse The Ski Team it was time to let the people have a glimpse at what an all original produced SOTA project might sound like.

The Ski Team is a group of producers from Los Angeles who have worked with artists all over the country. Most recently, they’ve placed a song on the TV Show Gossip Girl (Hollywood Holt – “Brains”) and have had a new video created to their song with Dom Kennedy and Dude Royal (“Don’t Go: The Remix”). Other artists they have worked with include Freddie Gibbs, Chip Tha Ripper and U-N-I.

While this is a remix project, SOTA being the creative individuals that they are took the time to lay down a brand new original track to close out this freely distributed tape. A moody, Pete Rock esque jam “New World Crime” features a Gil Scott-Heron sample that spoke to the boys and may be their best track yet. State of the Artist and Ski Team will continue to work together and this track should prove they need to. Be on the lookout for Ski Team contributions to State of the Artist’s upcoming full length debut SeattleCaliFragalisticExtraHellaDopeness.

S.O.T.A. ft. Helladope - ExtraHellaDope

After several mixtapes demonstrating the varied styles Parker, Young TH & Hyphen8d possess as State of the Artist they are ready to deliver their proper debut album, SeattleCaliFragalisticExtraHellaDopeness. An album comprised of collaborations with a who's who of the Seattle Hip Hop scene and production from Cali trio the SKI TEAM among other talents in the Northwest.

The lead single is the quasi title track "ExtraHellaDope" featuring current town staples Helladope. Parker produced a track that travels into Tay Sean's synth and spacy realm. The song is already a crowd favorite in both groups sets and a video is set to be shot this month.
